Archive for December, 2012

Amid a worldwide frenzy preparing for a Maya apocalypse, me and my family took the second week of December to vacation down in the Caribbean, visiting Costa Maya Mexico, Cozumel Mexico and Grand Cayman.  Along the way we thought an excursion to the Mayan Ruin site smack dab in the middle of mosquito infested Cozumel would be awesome. After all, the apocalypse was only a few days away and the world would be ending according to the Mayan Calendar. But not so fast, I grabbed some highly prohibited video at the Mayan site and Pedro our guide, who claims to be of Mayan decent, declares all is well and we shall see our way out of 2012 unscathed. WHEW!!!!!. See the video here and check out the huge lizards (Iguanas) too.

As a Pest Control Operator, and owner of Envirosafe, with offices in Belmont, Charlotte, Rock Hill, Lake Wylie, and Gastonia, I found something even more interesting at the Mayan site than the ruins and the armada of armegeddon tourist; a Caribbean species of aerial Termite called  The Nasutitermes corniger termite, which lives above ground, builds brown tubes up the outside walls of houses and trees and builds an aerial nest that looks similar to a large hornets next covered in brown dirt. As I looked to the top of the palapa (large Tiki Hut like structure common in Mexico) that tents one of the ruin sites we visited, I saw a huge aerial termite nest at the top of the palapa. Slowing destroying a structure covering an archeological site. Amazing!!!! I instinctively  look for termite evidence most any time I view a wooden structure, but  have never actually seen a nest since the subterranean terrors in out part of the world have under ground nests, thus the name Subterranean Termites. Check out the pictures and videos of the Tree Toppling Termites below…

Envirosafe Termite & Pest

Here we go again. This time it’s Edmund Stammers who disagrees with me. I welcome those disputing my blog posts but please be ready to back up your opinion with substantive facts. My creative pest control blog posts and dialogue are spawned from the industry’s most respected reference book. Pretty civil discussion, but again, I’m right, you’re wrong. Mr. Stammers asserted “any entomologist worth his/her salt” would disagree that humans can contract tapeworm from swallowing a flea. Not sure sure if there’s a more celebrated entomologist on planet earth than Dr. Nancy Hinkle, but I’m certain Mr. Stammers credentials don’t come close to matching those of Dr. Nancy Hinkle, Ph.D. and the author of the material I referenced. She’s arguably the most renowned entomologist in the World.  Here is the discussion generated by my blog post from two days ago about the same subject.

Fornication VS Formication. Which one you should be concerned with?

Hopefully neither of these terms affect your life. Formication should never be confused with fornication. One is the delusional belief that you have insects crawling all over (and under) your skin: the other is a Sin (I think??). If the two sensations are combined you should consult either a doctor, or maybe a priest, but NOT Envirosafe Termite & pest control  in Charlotte North Carolina. Either way, Jarrod Goforth nor myself will not be able to help you if you think either of these terms are problematic in your life.

I can’t count the number of times Envirosafe gets calls from a customer apparently suffering from Ekbom Syndrome. (Delusional parasitosis) (look it up). There is absolutely nothing Envirosafe Termite & Pest can do for you. Couple interesting facts concerning Formication is the fact that it’s derived from Formica, the Latin word for ant. Additionally, the only arthropods that infest humans are scabies mites and human lice. NO insect or mite can live in the Environment and switch to infesting the human body. Sadly, we encounter many clients each year who I can confirm with authority have delusional parasitosis.

We abate asbestos, remediate mold, mitigate radon, perform environmental pest control services and even have quite a collection of air scrubbers and ozone machines for mold spores and other airborne contaminants, but unfortunately, imaginary parasites are not part of our Environmental Services scope of work. Referring these clients to a medical doctor is not what they want to hear, but it’s the only option we have. -Rodney Allman CIE, Envirosafe Environmental Services www.charlotteasbestosandmoldremoval.com 704-392-2241

Many clients seek out pest control professionals for their delusional parasitis. We get our fair share here at Envirosafe Termite and Pest

Yes, I know! It’s lame to argue on the internet. Even more lame to argue about the size of turds. BUT, discussion forums are a shortcut to notoriety for me. Not in the sense that I’m getting my name out for potential clients but a much bigger goal of getting in key words and back links for a few of my websites which in turn makes my domains relevant to google, bing, and yahoo SEO, and therefore; rank on the first page at the top spot. Which in turn makes our phones absolutely ring of the hook. I.E. this link to my Environmental Business. Google Charlotte Asbestos Removal and you’ll find me somewhere on the first page. As you will find all twelve of my websites ranked first in the organic listings and or the map listings, or both.

Anyway, for the second time in two days I’ve had internet pest control operators argue their opinion against my facts. Their source? Obviously their imaginations. My source; the horse’s mouth, aka “Mallis Handbook of Pest Control”.  It’s hard to argue with the Bible of the Pest Control Industry and its obvious this Texan representing McGrath Pest Control out of Texas hasn’t seen the size of the American Roaches roaming the Carolinas.  Maybe American Roaches are Cowboy fans and left Texas back when America’s Team Sprinted into eternal irrelevance (Circa 1996). Regardless, this Cowboy from McGrath Pest Control was wrong. (You’re welcome for the backlink Mr. McGrath). Please reciprocate – Envirosafe Termite & Pest

I’ve posted the dialogue from the discussion. Please feel free to chime in with your thoughts or questions.

Today, I traveled up to a Lincolnton North Carolina Farm house to give a gentleman a price on Termite Protection for his home. After I performed an inspection, he took me out to his barn to show off a couple of old tractors. Immediately catching my eye on an old work bench was anachronistic blast from the past.

There it was, an unopened bottle of DDT. (See images below)  DDT  was Banned in the United States more than 30 years ago, and  it remains America’s best known toxic substance. Like some sort of rap star, it’s known just by its initials; it’s the Notorious B.I.G. of pesticides. And much like the Notorious B.I.G., it has been put to rest. Many scientist blame the thousands of deaths from malaria on the ban of DDT. Most industry leaders and media publications agree it’s common knowledge that the ban of DDT is the sole reason for the resurgence of a pest species which was almost extinct.

Happy Holidays from Envirosafe Temite & Pest

This past summer a customer of ours in Lake Wylie, South Carolina had us come out to her home to perform a flea treatment in her yard for a moderately heavy infestation of fleas. The fleas were everywhere in the yard area. Their lot is nestled on a wooded lot in River Hills on a cove partially overlooking the lake. There is abundant wildlife including racoons and opossums that frequent her yard. Additionally there are squirrels and feral cats that roam her property. She has no pets.

tapeworm

The lady’s child had contracted tapeworms (flat segmented worms that live in the intestines of some animals and grow up to 50 feet long) she was curious as to whether her little girls exposure to the fleas or flea bites may have been causative of the tapeworms. Tapeworms are commonly contracted by humans through consumption of undercooked beef or raw fish. According to the mother, this little girl had not eaten any undercooked fish or beef.  After researching the internet, I found this dialogue where someone asks if you can contract tapeworms by accidentally swallowing a flea. Yahoo Answers.Com. This place made me embarrassed to have my computer plugged in to a telephone line. A sorry collection of slope-browed bottom feeders, all gathering to vomit their two cents worth oblivious to the fact they haven’t a clue. I almost chimed in but didn’t really want to interact with these people more than humanly possible, as I felt it would only increase the revulsion I had for these mouth breathing tools to the point where I actually vomited onto my keyboard. See the stupidity below for yourselves….

After losing a few IQ points from the likes of Pelle K, who claims to be a Doctor, I decided to to a little more research to see if anything more substantial could be found on this issue. Unbelievable, but after reading through the Ectoparasite section of pest control‘s most revered reference book, “Mallis Handbook of Pest Control”, there it was in the first paragraph on page 519. “Flea larvae consume tapeworm eggs and tapeworm development occurs within the flea. If a tapeworm-containing flea is consumed by a dog or a cat during grooming, the tapeworm breaks out of the flea in the animal’s gut and attaches to the intestinal wall. Similarly, humans can be infested by inadvertently swallowing fleas, as might happen with small children.”

So, the answer is obviously yes! It is a most definite possibility that this little girl accidentally swallowed a flea while playing in the yard and contracted tapeworm.

The time of year has come for us to breakout the Christmas Decor. Those of us who live in Belmont, North Carolina  are reminded of this by Belmont’s fine annual tradition of a Christmas parade right through the middle of what was once a thriving textile town nestled betweenst two rivers. Many of us men are summonsed to the attic by our wives to dig out boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations. With Thanksgiving gone, it’s time to get into the holiday spirit and make our homes festive with our Christmas Trees and decor! As a healthy holiday reminder, let me remind everyone to remember those stored boxes in the attic could have provide harborage and a home to miscellaneous pests during the past few months. Be aware that when you unpack the Christmas tree ornaments, you could likewise be unleashing infestations.

While there is an unlimited number of pests that may have found harborage in your decoration boxes, or may hitchhike in on a fresh cut tree, there are several likely suspects everyone should be made aware of and lookout for.

Spiders – Most spiders are not going to cause harm but they do leave unsightly webs and tend to cause quite a scare if they suddenly appear in your box of decorations. Spiders will bite if they feel threatened and some species such as the black widow can leave venomous bites that require medical attention. Spiders could be hiding in your boxes of decorations or within the branches of your Christmas tree.

Silverfish – Mostly a nuisance pest, silverfish can infest your decorations and other personal belongings in large numbers. They seek out moist places, which makes your basement, attic or wherever you store your decorations a great place for silverfish to thrive. Thought they do not bite, they are hard to get rid of.

Mice – A more serious threat to your holiday season is an infestation of mice. These rodents have a constant need to gnaw and can easily damage your decorations and other personal belongings. Their droppings and urine will also contaminate surfaces and can spread bacteria and other harmful pathogens to you and your family. If they happen to gnaw on electrical equipment like your holiday lights, there is also a risk of a fire starting.

In order to prevent unpacking a pest infestation right in the middle of your home, it is best to bring your decorations outside where you can sort through the boxes and inspect for any pests or their damages. Toss out broken or damaged decor and if you happen to find evidence of mice or any other nuisance pest issues, then give us a call at Envirosafe Termite & Pest . Our pest control technicians  are ready to get rid of Christmas pest issues so that you can enjoy your Christmas as it is meant to be – with NO pests.
